What to Bring

You will need to bring your own:

• Pillows
• Sheets/blankets or sleeping bag
• Towels/washcloths

A mattress pad will be provided on each bed.

Dorm room beds are longer than a standard twin-size bed. The dimensions are 36 x 80 inches, and twin-size fitted sheets don’t fit very well. A few options are to purchase extra-long single sheets, bring a flat sheet that will be a bit short for the bed, or to bring a sleeping bag to put on top of the mattress.

Students should bring spending money for souvenirs, drinks, snacks, and any other personal items.

Meal cards will be picked up at registration. The meal card you receive as part of your registration fee is good only at residence hall dining facilities and will only cover some of your meals. The basic HSJI meal card will not cover all your meals for five days.

Bring a debit or credit card to supplement your meal card in case you run short. IU Dining Halls do not accept cash, but local restaurants do.

Summers in Bloomington are often warm and humid. Clothing should be cool and comfortable; casual clothes will be sufficient for classes. Classes are held in a variety of places, and students will do a lot of walking. Therefore, comfortable walking shoes and socks are necessary. It often rains during the summer, so bring an umbrella. All dorm rooms, classrooms, cafeterias, recreation rooms, main lounges, and floor lounges are air-conditioned.

There are no supplies required for you to bring, but it is always good to bring a notepad and pen/pencil.

• Comfortable walking shoes: you’ll be doing a LOT of walking
• Pocket-sized notebook and pens or pencils — you’ll need to take notes for captions and take notes during class
• A place to store photos that you want to keep after the workshop — this can be a flash drive or access to cloud storage such as Google drive
• Camera
  • You have the option to borrow a digital camera from IU during the workshop. They will be the same Canon cameras that IU Media School students use.
  • You may bring your own camera if you like but make sure you have the following:
    • A memory card that works with your camera (minimum 2 GB). Back up photos you want to keep before you arrive on campus. You will be erasing your card before taking photos for the workshop.
    • Rechargeable batteries and charger (charge them before you come to IU) OR plenty of non-rechargeable batteries that work with your camera.
    • The instruction manual for your camera
    • Case or bag for your camera and gear

  • You have the option to borrow a digital camera from IU during the workshop. They are the same Canon cameras and accessories that IU Media School students use.
  • If you wish to use your own camera, make sure you have everything on this checklist:
    • A digital SLR camera with a detachable lens
    • A memory card that works with your camera
    • A memory card reader that is compatible with your camera
    • Rechargeable batteries and charger (charge them before you come to HSJI)
    • The instruction manual for your camera
    • Case or bag for your camera and gear
  • Comfortable walking shoes: you’ll be doing a LOT of walking
  • Pocket-sized notebook and pens or pencils — you’ll need to take notes for captions and take notes during class
  • A place to store work that you want to keep after the workshop — this can be a flash drive or access to cloud storage such as Google drive.

• If you plan to bring your own laptop, make sure Audacity is installed on it

PLAN AHEAD — At IU, you will have access to the full Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign. Additionally, we have a Mac lab reserved for yearbook production. To be prepared, please make sure you have the following:

• Access to your school’s production software or website, including photo libraries
• Any fonts or color guides from your publisher’s yearbook kit
• Any planning you’ve done with your staff prior to HSJI
• For editors: access to organization tools (e.g., ladder, Trello/Slack, etc.)
• If you prefer to start your designs on paper, we’ll provide grid planning sheets and writing utensils; you can also bring any other design tools you prefer to use
• Access to storage (e.g., Chromebook/laptop OR flash drive)
• A copy of your latest yearbook, if possible! (one per school — this isn’t a donation to HSJI; feel free to bring your personal copy to share)
