HSJI strives to support you as you explore your media interests. We offer two types of funding for students: grants to attend HSJI workshops and college scholarships recognizing students who do outstanding work during their workshops.
Grants to attend HSJI
There are two grants available to students seeking assistance in coming to HSJI. These grants will cover students’ full registration fees, lodging, and most meals.
HSJI offers Multicultural Scholarships for students coming from underrepresented, diverse, or minority backgrounds who need support to attend workshops. Those who will be the first generation in their family to attend college are also welcome to apply.
The Bloomington Press Club sponsors the attendance of two students from Bloomington-area high schools for five-day sessions of HSJI.
High school students in Monroe and Brown counties, including Bloomington High School North, Bloomington High School South, Brown County High School, and Edgewood High School, are eligible to apply.
The awards ceremony held on the last day of each workshop recognizes seniors who excelled during their time at HSJI. Those demonstrating a passion for journalism will receive $400-$500 grants to attend Indiana University the following fall.
Scholarships are presented by The Media School and the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. Some are general scholarships, while others are for students intending to major in journalism after high school.
Students do not have to apply for or complete any paperwork in advance for these scholarships. The application process is conducted during the HSJI workshops. Only students who are rising seniors in high school are eligible for these scholarships.
