While attending the High School Journalism Institute, you’ll step into the shoes of college students as you spend your nights in on-campus housing. During your stay, you’ll have a roommate and really get a taste of life on campus.
You will be supervised by counselors who are students here at IU, and often, they’re also studying within The Media School. If you have any questions or problems while you are here, please ask the dorm counselors. They have been specially trained to help!
Housing
All students will stay in Spruce Hall Residence Center. This fully air-conditioned dorm is on the east side of campus and within a six- to eight-block walk of most HSJI large- and small-group sessions. Male and female students will occupy separate areas of the residence hall.
During HSJI, you will receive a $110 prepaid meal card, included in the workshop registration fee. These meal cards are good only at dining options on campus. Cash is not accepted at campus dining facilities.
Students will need more than $110 to cover meals for the five-day session. You may purchase an extra meal card or bring a personal debit or credit card to supplement the initial balance. If you would like to purchase an additional $50 meal card, you may choose the option on the online payment form during registration. No refunds are available for unspent meal card balances.
Most HSJI workshops are held in Franklin Hall, which is on the opposite side of campus from the dorm and Forest Dining Hall. We have found that students often opt to have lunch at nearby restaurants instead of walking back to the food court. Keep in mind that these restaurants do not accept the IU meal card, so be sure to bring extra funding if you choose to go.
Dietary accommodations
The primary dining facility for HSJI will be Forest Dining Hall. For those who need to follow a strict diet or have food allergies, this food court offers several options.
If you have a prescription for an Epi-pen, please carry it at all times.
Learn more about IU’s food accommodations:
IU Dining staff are trained in allergens and food preparation. They will understand any circumstances and do their best to accommodate. It’s important that you communicate your food allergies and restrictions to staff members so they can provide you with what you need.
For self-serve areas like salad bars, do not hesitate to ask for fresh items that have not been out on the line where cross contact can occur. Gluten-free items (e.g., buns for burgers) are available on request from trained chefs, so please ask.
Visit NetNutrition to view online menus, full ingredients, nutrition, and allergen information for IU Dining locations.
IU Dining has a labeling system for allergen identification using icons that appear on menus, linecards, and NetNutrition. To learn more information about allergy management and labels, visit IU Dining's website. In addition, it has labels for dietary preferences that can be viewed on its Diet and Preferences page.
If you can’t find something, please ask! At Forest Eatery, you can ask to speak with a manager or certified chef de cuisine. These are trained professionals who you can trust to give accurate information.
Please keep in mind that line associates, although knowledgeable about meal service, are NOT the experts and cannot confidently answer questions on product allergens or recipe ingredients.
If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the IU Dining Services dietitian through email at nutrinfo@indiana.edu or at 812-856-5851.
