Stepping Up
junior Siang Zi steps up into new roles for her upcoming school year
High school is widely seen as a time to try out new activities, create new friendships, and figure out what you are passionate about. Many start with high expectations and full schedules. Junior Siang Zi unexpectedly found her passion after joining her high school’s yearbook staff. Not long into the program she discovered her passion for journalism.
“As a sophomore when I joined I had no idea it was this much responsibility when I joined,” Zi said. “I’m so glad I did it because it’s actually something I’m passionate about.”
Her first year on staff Zi was just a regular staffer but her second year of staff will include a higher position.
“Next year I am going to be the Junior editor in chief but it’s a lot of pressure,” Zi said.
One of Zi’s main responsibilities will be looking over the drafts that other staffers create.
“We have to look at the draft they wrote and see if what they wrote is good and if their pictures are good,” Zi said.
Along with her role on the yearbook staff she is also a part of the Riley Dance Marathon where students help raise money for sick children in the Riley Children’s Hospital. Within this club she is also stepping up into a higher position.
“I am going to be one of the directors for RDM as well,” Zi said
She hopes to help reignite the student body’s participation in the club and help raise more money than previous years.
“Last year we had really good student leadership so this year since the expectations were so high it just kind of went downhill,” Zi said. “The people in it are amazing. I just feel like we have to better organize it.”
