I Think The Poets Might Disagree
Isabella Roberts expresses her dreams to be a writer and who has influenced her passion.
Starting out with violin, rising senior Isabella Roberts has a passion for music which she hopes to continue into the future. Isabella’s love of music is largely driven by her father as is her love of writing.
“My dad collects records, he’s played the guitar for me my whole life, so I just kind of grew up in that.” Isabella said, followed by, “My dad is also a writer, basically he influenced my whole life. He wrote short stories, but I’ve wanted to be an author since like second grade. I’ve obviously adapted.”
Authors that have inspired Isabella’s work have primarily been Oceans Long and Richard Siken, due to their primary focus in poetry, which is what Isabella is more prominently drawn to. Poetry gives Isabella a space to write about her own life, Isabella tends to do almost all her poetry on personal events that are important to her.
“I had a friend breakup last summer and its grief stricken me for so long. I write about them a lot because we still go to the same school, so I see them a lot.”
Poetry is the style for Isabella because when growing up, she would try to write stories but always found it difficult to start and finish. The mundane buildup of beginnings and endings was not something Isabella enjoyed, so she turned to poetry to express herself.
“I only wanted to write the poetic parts, I only wanted to write the parts that looked pretty, I didn’t want to write anything mundane so then I was like, ‘well I can literally just only write pretty things and so I write poetry.”
In the future, Isabella hopes to attend Emerson University in Boston and major in either journalism and political science or creative writing. The dream for Isabella would be living in the woods in Oregon and owning a bookstore that would host poetry nights.
“Hopefully I can have a career in creative writing, but I’ll probably work at a publishing company.” Said Isabella, followed by, “Emerson has a really good english program and I want to live in the city. It’s not as big as New York, and it’s far from home.”
