Meeting Makeup
As the bus rumbled towards Carmel High School, senior Lina Liu prayed that she would not look like a clown as she shakily practiced doing her eyeliner before school.
Liu felt that she was very easily influenced by the media, which led her to discovering a newfound interest in makeup.
“I was really into TikTok at this time, this was about a couple of years ago when I was a sophomore. I was obsessed with it and would spend a long time scrolling through my for you page. I would come across ‘get ready with me’s’ and see them do their makeup. I don’t know what it was about them but they were just really cool whenever they would do their makeup,” Liu said.
Makeup became a hobby for Liu.
“I didn’t really see it as something I would do in the future, like cosmetology or anything like that. I just saw it as something to do for fun. I also was just getting into it so I obviously wasn’t the best at it, but I enjoyed it so I kept doing it,” Liu said.
Practicing makeup wasn’t the easiest, especially since Liu had school everyday.
“On the way to school, I would try to practice my eyeliner on the bus. It was so awful because the bus ride was always so shaky. Carmel has a ton of round-a-bouts and so it was just a nightmare trying to get a good wing. I would end up going into school and having to tell everyone that I was still a beginner because I knew my eyeliner looked messy. It would feel really rewarding, though, whenever people would tell me that my makeup looked good. It gave me a boost of confidence,” Liu said.
