Fast fashion is too good to be true
Fast fashion isn’t what it seems to be. The Center for Biological Diversity stated that the fast fashion industry is responsible for as much as 10% of global carbon dioxide emissions. This fact is honestly ridiculous to me. No matter what way people will try to twist it, possibly arguing the cost efficiency, the numbers are still insanely high. No price tag should be worth the slow demise of our earth; especially because it’s polluting the oxygen we breathe.
Fast fashion affects even those who don’t indulge in it. The effects of fast fashion are linked to habitat degradation, climate change, and impacts on terrestrial and aquatic environments. The atmosphere is 62 miles above us, how are we affecting somewhere that far up? It honestly baffles me that we can be so destructive to the point of destroying a place only a handful of people can get to. Animals are also being affected for our fashion needs. They are losing their natural habitats at the expense of “cute clothes”; fast fashion is a notorious source of microplastics which makes its way into marine environments.
Fast fashion exploits their workers in order to provide insanely cheap prices. These workers work long hours while still earning unlivable wages. They’re also working in hazardous conditions at the expense of creating more products. This is why we should stop indulging and supporting fast fashion by buying so much of what they are selling. The only way to save them and our planet is to stop fueling the fire. We don’t have to stop it entirely, but researching the clothes you’re buying and making a habit of choosing necessity over indulgence will make a difference on its own. I think avoiding online shops such as SHEIN and Romwe with an addition of donating and thrifting would be a great start to bettering our future.
